We have from time to time a way for those who wish to find out what it feels like to homestead and live a sustainable life without taking a major risk.  You simply live in the ranch house in our community which becomes vacant as renters try out the new life and then either move on or take the next step towards homesteading.  The occupants will have several requirements.  They will be required to pay utilities which includes electrical and phone.  They will agree to manage and tend the community garden, oversee the food co-op, take orders for food requests and finally make the food deliveries.

What does this “house” look like you may be wondering.  It is a ranch style house built in the 50’s.  There are three bedrooms and one bathroom on the main floor.  There is also main floor laundry, large refrigerator, newer range, a huge stone fireplace, a woodburning furnace in the full basement, vaulted ceilings with wood floors and an attached garage.  There is a “bunk house” attached to the back of the house which can provide additional sleeping and living space.  While a bit more rustic, the bunk house has its own bathroom, laundry tubs, wood stove and kitchen sink.

Living at the community ranch house provides an up close opportunity to see the self sustaining lifestyle and find out if you are ready for it.
